BGC Hungary – After-School English Teacher

Boys and Girls Clubs of Hungary (BGCH) is the first European sister club of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and a partner of the World Federation of Youth Clubs. The primary goal of the BGC English Program is to effectively teach English in a native environment.

If you are a native or bilingual English speaker with European Union, British, or US nationality who is passionate about working with young children and seeking a challenging and rewarding experience abroad, then Boys and Girls Clubs of Hungary (BGC) is looking for you!

About the position

Location: Budapest, Hungary – Placements are in public schools (The BGC English Program in Hungary currently operates in seven public educational institutions).

Contract: Permanent 1st Sept 2024 – 30th June 2025.

Students: Aged between 3 and 14 years.

Responsibilities: As an educator, you will play a crucial role in achieving their mission through sensory skills and hands-on activities that take place in an encouraging atmosphere where they promote personal growth, optimism, and creativity.

Your main duties and working hours framework will include:

  • Lead our full-immersion English language BGC After-school curriculum, facilitate conversational club time activities / ART, SPORTS, DRAMAPLAY, SCIENCE, MUSIC ..etc./, and prepare visual aids to ensure comprehensible input for non-native students aged 6-14.
  • You can work part time or full time depending on your personal preference which they will discuss during the selection process:
    • Part-time: 30 hours/week (approx.: 20 hrs/in class and 10 hrs/week for administration, preparation, meetings, and receiving mentoring)
    • Classroom responsibilities: provide English speaking environment with 5 x 75 mins curriculum-based teaching sessions included + active involvement during garden and snack time, conduct transition times, indoor free play sessions
    • Full-time: 40 hours/week (approx.: 20 hrs/in class and 10 hrs/week for administration, preparation, meetings, and receiving mentoring + 10 hrs/week sub teacher responsibilities in the BGC Preschool Program)
    • Classroom responsibilities: provide English speaking environment with 7 x 75 mins curriculum-based teaching sessions included + supervise garden and snack time, conduct transition times, indoor free play sessions
    • In addition to your classroom responsibilities, you will also attend meetings, and occasionally help to organise and participate in site events – included in the above-mentioned working hours
  • Supervise the students side-by-side with a Hungarian licensed classroom teacher in grades 1-4, and lead the sessions by yourself in grades 5-8

Requirements

They are looking for teachers with the following qualifications:

  • Native English speakers or balanced bilingual (English skills match those of a native speaker, raised by a native parent, or received at least 8 years of education in an English-speaking institute).
  • Licensed teacher or teacher with substantial teaching and classroom management experience.
  • You can commit to 10 months and hold a TEFL / CELTA certificate if you are not a licensed teacher.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, adaptable to new cultures, have personal and professional ambition, and are passionate about working with young children.
  • Have interests and strong skills in at least two of the following areas: storytelling; arts&crafts; sports; music; ESL; drama; STEM; cooking.
