Westgate – Young Learners & Secondary School Positions in Japan – Spring 25 Term
Westgate is accepting applications from overseas and from inside Japan for the in-class teaching positions of their Young Learners English Program, and Secondary School English Program.
About the Young Learners and the Secondary School English Programs
In the Young Learners and the Secondary School English Programs, Westgate entrusts you with the responsibility of being the sole instructor in the classroom.
You have an opportunity to create a nurturing study environment for students at the beginning of their journey into English. It’s an exciting challenge that immerses you in the Japanese school system while expanding your teaching skills.
Location: Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture
Contract period:
- Year-long: Late March to March of the following year (approximately 12 months)
- Term-based: Late March to Late July (approximately 4 months)
Classes: Teaching 20-minute or 45-minute classes requiring 1-3 lesson plans a day. In lessons on both the Young Learners and Secondary School English Programs, the Westgate instructor would be the sole instructor in the classroom, not an assistant language teacher
Class Size: Approximately 15-20 students
Students: Teaching students ages 7 through 18.
Teaching schedule:
- Monday to Friday. Instructors are occasionally asked to work on Saturdays, Sundays, or national holidays.
- Starting/finishing hours will vary from school to school, but all instructors are required to be on campus for typically nine hours per day (such as from around 9 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. or similar – Japan Standard Time), up to 5 of which will be actual teaching hours. The “on-campus” hours do not include commuting time.

You may also be asked to perform other duties such as attending meetings and handling teaching-related paperwork and duties.

Requirements
Qualification requirements
- University graduate with a bachelor’s and/or more advanced degree and one of the following:
- 500+ hours of actual EFL/ESL classroom teaching experience along with EFL/ESL teaching certificate and/or elementary/primary/secondary teaching credentials/qualifications
- 1000+ hours of actual EFL/ESL classroom teaching experience in lieu of teaching certificate or credentials/qualifications
- Some classroom teaching experience with young learners (for Young Learners positions)
- No Japanese language ability is required.
- Non-EFL/ESL teaching experience may be considered.
Technical requirements:
Instructors will need to use their own computers to work and teach during their employment with Westgate. Occasionally, they are required to bring their own laptop to the campus.
In order for instructors to be able to work smoothly through Westgate’s IT system, the following hardware requirements would need to be met:
- CPU: Intel Core i5 or higher; Apple M1 Chip or higher
- Memory: 8GB or higher
- Internet speed: 10Mbps or faster with a stable connection
- Operating System: • Microsoft Windows 10(Home or Pro) Version 22H2 or newer; Microsoft Windows 11(Home or Pro) Version 23H2 or newer; Apple macOS Ventura 13.7 or newer (Instructors who use another OS would need to check with them for confirmation about whether that OS is acceptable or not.)
- Browser: Microsoft Edge; Google Chrome latest version; Apple Safari 18 or newer
- Valid and active anti-virus software
- Web camera and microphone
- Adobe Acrobat Reader DC
Instructors must agree to install applications that are required by Westgate.
